EMPIRICAL OBSERVATION

Snow blankets the landscape, transforming everything. Edges soften, shapes blur into a uniform softness. Beneath this white veil, the hidden remain a mystery, creating a world of silent secrets.

VIRTUE

2021

As slowly and quietly as the snowflakes are laid over the landscape, the resulting snow cover can become very powerful. Houses can collapse, trees crack under the weight of the snow. Snow carries an extraordinary power in itself, which one cannot escape. This force and imposition are aspects that one does not immediately associate with the material snow. But they characterize the interaction of snow and the environment.
This message is expressed by a 0.6 mm thick iron plate, painted white on one side, drawn over an object with a hammer. This molding represents the covering property of snow. A new form is created, just as in real snowfall.
In detail, you can see the places where the hammer was applied. Here the paint is chipped and the metal shines through. This surface is reminiscent of a snowy mountain landscape. The violence and the veiling are aptly represented by this object.

PROCESS

The metal plate is first cleaned so that the paint can adhere well. It is then colored on one side with spray paint in RAL tone 9002. After drying, the plate is placed over the stencil and beaten to shape using a hammer. In the process, the paint flakes off at the impact points and gives the object its special aesthetics. It is important not to stress the material too much, so that it does not crack. When I am satisfied with the shape, the process is finished.
